As part of its ongoing mission to work against botnets, malware, spam, viruses, DDoS attacks and other online exploitations, M3AAWG has joined other industry supporters for October Cybersecurity Awareness Month as a 2021 Champion. This year’s theme, “Do Your Part. #BeCyberSmart”, will guide efforts to make users aware of potential vulnerabilities and how to protect against them.

The main focus for 2021 includes:

• Basic cyber hygiene, including strong passwords, use of multi-factor authentication, updating software and backing up devices
• Recognizing and reporting phishing attempts
• Prioritizing cybersecurity by encouraging “secure by design” practices and considering security when purchasing connected devices.
• Encouraging employment and engagement in cybersecurity professions

The average cost of a data breach in 2020 was $3.86 million and took an average 280 days to identify and contain (IBM). During the recent pandemic, the use of new breach techniques has grown with more than 35 percent of breaches involving a new method. Finally, malware increased by 358 percent in 2020 (Help Net Security). 
Cybersecurity Awareness Month started in 2004 with a presidential proclamation and is organized by the National Cyber Security Alliance. More info, tips and ideas to stay safe are at https://staysafeonline.org.
